Beth Carter – Myth, Melancholy, Magic
Nestled in the heart of the French Riviera, the picturesque medieval village of Mougins hosts ‘Mougins Monumental’, an annual open-air exhibition of monumental sculptures.
Beth Carter has been invited by the Municipality of Mougins to install 30 bronze sculptures throughout the village for Mougins Monumental 2026. From 7th February through to 1st November her sculptures will engage in dialogue with the local heritage, the narrow streets, small squares and gardens, offering visitors an experience that is at once mythological, poetic and contemporary.
Beth was previously invited, in 2023, to exhibit three sculptures at the Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Vie, Mougins, as part of the 50th anniversary of the death of Pablo Picasso. The chapel is sited adjacent to the Mas Notre-Dame de Vie, the last residence and artistic workshop of Picasso, where he lived with his last wife and muse Jacqueline Roque until his death in 1973. Beth Carter’s work maintains a close connection with Picasso’s, as the figure of the Minotaur lies at the heart of both of their artistic approaches.
